anglepoise

The Anglepoise lamp was designed in 1933 by the British designer George Carwardine (pictured above). Carwardine was a motor car designer who applied his engineering skill to build a lamp which mimicked the joints of the human arm. The joints and spring tension allow the lamp to be placed in a wide range of positions and remain stationary without the need for clamping. The original Anglepoise was manufactured by Herbert Terry & Sons in 1934. The design is characteristic of the functional approach to office and domestic design that was dominant in the 1930s. In 2004 Kenneth Grange designed the Type 75 Anglepoise for Anglepoise Ltd which is a 21st century update on the original concept. A British design classic that has stood the test of the time and has redefined how versatile a table lamp can be, no matter what its intended use.
